Objects collected on the battlefield, preserved by soldiers and families, and passed down for more than a century. Small testimonies of the Great War that have reached us through paths often winding and unpredictable. A helmet remembered in a war diary and kept for generations. The collar stars that a captured soldier hid to prevent them from being taken away. The memorial plaque of an aviator who fell in the skies over Trentino. A razor made in the trenches from materials that reflect the harshness of life at the front. Simple objects, sometimes modest, often preserved as keepsakes already during the war itself. In many cases they are accompanied by notes, letters, or memories that preserve their meaning. This book gathers some of these war relics and reconstructs their stories. Material testimonies that span more than a century and continue to reveal the tragic and human face of war.

The Series – War Relics The memory of past wars lives in history books and memoirs, in archives and documents. But it also survives in objects: uniforms, identification tags, everyday utensils, and fragments that still bear the marks of their time and can convey something of the men who once owned them. Precisely because they have passed through the inferno, carrying the signs of suffering, they become relics. Those who preserved and handed them down have, in a sense, transformed them into sacred memories — of those who returned and of those who did not. Proof of a passage, a final gift. This first volume was born from an attention to these material memories and from the desire to share them: to preserve them, study them, and tell their stories. Over time the custodians of these fragments of memory have changed many times, yet the intention has always remained the same: to keep the past alive through something that still speaks to both our hearts and our minds.
